Joanna Paperhat Nersch

I drew this one evening while in the Builders Arms. I'd started the session with a couple of friends who left early but not before our table was overtaken by a group of much younger folk celebrating a birthday. One of them honed in and started talking about my drawing. Her name was Joanna, too. There was too much of an age gap. I had a conscience then. Maybe I was too self conscious. Still like the picture, though.

Hysteria #3 cover sketch

I had a lot of goes at this. The girl on the cover of Hysteria #1 was adapted from a photograph of one of Charcot's hysteria patients. The second was a mutation of that one looking crazier and sporting huge claws. This had her sprouting roots into her mattress and long dangling runners like a banyan tree. The one I eventually went with was far more aboreal. She was shedding foliage as it was meant to be an Autumn theme. I'll try and dig that one out.

Maria

This is Maria Szabo from an imagined graphic version of a short story called Spring also featuring Eugen Drada from the strip below (the story came before the Oblomov Days strip)

Oblomov Days 3

This was a first run at the regular strip Oblomov Days from the aborted Hysteria #3. The strip was a thinly veiled self parody of what I was like in my twenties.

A sketch for the story Heat from Tango 5 Senses.
Not intended for final story.

Brian Mutz: Coroner

One of many from Coloured Pencil Nacht in the terrible winter of '96. Diena had given me a box o' coloured pencils for my birthday and I spent a night in the lounge room, using the tv as muzak and trying out the colours. Here's one.

Self confrontation from unpublished story

This is part of the climactic sequence for what would have been the main story in Hysteria #3, Adrift. Having looked at it again recently, while scanning it, I think I will finish it and publish it somewhere. It's about twenty pages.

Seabird

Needed some relief from work on The Monsoons. This seabird presented herself.

Bulbnose

Nothing major, here. I tuned the feel of the tip of the cintiq pen a little more finely and tried a favourite combination of pen over visible pencil. jpg compression does little for rendering pencil. Ah well. Still, I like it as further evidence of the influence of Dr Seuss on my characters.

Irritus: Angel of Heatwaves

Disgustingly hot even at ten to midnight. Drew this after playing around with the crowquill and brush settings.
I think I should probably really have that gin and tonic now.
